Pognana is a charming small lake village with friendly residents. The house is above the main road up a steep curvy road about 3 minutes drive up. Please note you cannot drive right to the house as street is too narrow and stony in parts. But advantage is no traffic noise! There is free public parking (see photos) just after the cemetery about 3 mins walk from house or around the cemetery road. If not renting a car, please note there is no local taxi service or Uber and buses finish around 21.30h. I can recommend a local driver but he should be booked well in advance. Closest petrol station, pharmacy and bank are in Torno (8 mins towards Como). I recommend you have some cash in euros as not everywhere accepts cards (there is a cash machine is the village grocer)
Please note check in is from 14.00 and you can self check in. Check out is 10.30. If you want a later time please message me direct as it depends on subsequent guests arrival. I’m happy to be flexible if it’s possible.
From April to October the Italian stay tax is payable direct in cash euros on arrival. 2 euros per person per night.
FOOD STORE
There is a small grocer store selling fresh bread and croissants, delicatessen, fruit and vegetables, drinks, general supplies and butcher (open almost every day in high season, otherwise closed Sundays and Monday afternoons).
WHERE TO EAT IN THE VILLAGE
For dining out, lunch and dinner, walking distance there is Meridiana restaurant (closed on Wednesdays) and the fabulous Villa Lario (open April to Oct). Tel numbers are in the house on the info sheet.
The second bar is Sonya Bar (closed Mondays) about 10 mins walk from house on the ancient footpath called the Strada Regia or a few mins by car (driving away from Como direction)
A fabulous new restaurant called Insolito - meaning unusual - has just opened right on the Imbarcardero (ferry dock) down many steps from the main road but well worth the walk.
SHOPPING
If shopping in Como, bear in mind that a lot of shops close for Italian lunch "hour" roughly from twelve thirty to three thirty. For nightlife, there is the Lido at Bellagio and Faggeto.
SIGHTSEEING
There are 3 churches in Pognana one of which San Rocco dates back to 9th century and well worth seeing. All walkable from the house. The house directly looks onto George Clooneys villa on the other side of the lake.
GETTING AROUND
The ferry to Como or Bellagio departs regularly in high season from the Imbarcadero (ferry dock) at the bottom of the main Pognana steps (15 mins walk). Timetable and tickets available online at navigazioneLaghi Choose Lake Como. There is also a bus service C30 or C32 with stops in either direction (to Como or to Bellagio) at the bottom of the main steps. Tickets can be bought in advance from Peppos or Sonya bar. Peppos also offer take away or eat in pizza on weekends and light meals during the week. Peppos is closed on Thursdays. The other bar in the village is Sonya bar, which is closed on Mondays. Private boat rental is available (small boats can be rented without captains licence but must provide ID) at Mostes in Faggeto Lario (neighbouring village). Weekends are difficult to park so get there early. There is also a lido beach bar at Faggeto which has dinner and live music on Saturdays in summer. Swimming in the lake is safe. Bellagio with its fabulous boutiques, cafes and views to both sides of the lake, is definitely worth a visit, either by car or public ferry. Via road, about 25 mins. For romantic dining, I would recommend the restaurant at Hotel Vapore lakefront at Torno, 10 mins by car towards Como (open from Easter to early Nov). Mention my name and you should get a lakefront table! Further recommendations in print out in house.
Guest access
The old wooden door at entrance level is the cellar door. The front door is up an external staircase on the right side of the house. See photos. You have free use of the whole house during your stay (apart from cellars) and it is very quiet and private. The house is not reachable by car and is 3 minutes walk from the closest street parking. Heavy suitcases or high heels not recommended! Not suitable for people with walking difficulties.
Other things to note
Car hire is recommended as public transport is limited. Small cars best for Italian roads. If not hiring a car, I can recommend an airport or station transfer service. direct). To find the parking and house please follow my check in instructions with photos precisely - do not input house address to maps. It is recommended to have some euros in cash and the tourist tax of 2 euros per person per night from April to October is payable in cash. Please note the house is not reachable by car and is 3 minutes walk from the closest parking. Heavy suitcases not recommended. The washing machine is not available to guests. There is a launderette in Blevio.
