On the summit of the peak that gave it its name, Savoy Mountain Cottage is located at 2150 feet, the highest year-round residential elevation in Southern New England. Dramatic, year-round accommodations abut Savoy Mountain State Forest--11,118 acres of successive hilltops in the state's northwest corner.

Two quite different units share the Berkshire tradition of rural urbanity. Lovingly converted from a small barn, Savoy Mountain Cottage has five tasteful rooms and a barnboard outdoor shower. Cathedral ceilings, step-down kitchen, full indoor bath, bedroom, convertible living room, and 19 mullion windows make the cozy cottage feel spacious. Knotty pine doors and built-ins are custom-made and finished with forged hardware. Antique lovers will appreciate countertops of 400-million-year-old Ashfield Stone.

Or choose the dramatic farmhouse apartment, dating from 1820, and featuring an open great room with wide pine floors, 12-foot cathedral ceilings, exposed posts and beams, and 10 mullion windows facing south and east. A half-flight up is a charming garret bedroom with mullion windows, skylight, and walk-out deck. Skylights attract more sun in kitchen and bath.

Each tasteful unit features a screened brick patio with 360° forest and mountain views, comes fully equipped and furnished, includes dishwasher and laundry facilities, and sleeps four. Both units are non-smoking.

Located eight miles from Mass MoCA in North Adams--the largest American museum of contemporary art--and twelve miles from the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown. The Berkshires also offer a wide array of year-round restaurants, theaters, and grocery stores.

TRAILS AND TERRAIN: Near your door, miles of trails wind through old-growth Berkshire forest, skirt remote ponds, and afford breathtaking views of mountain ranges in four states.

For the most part, this backcountry terrain rises and falls gently, with some stretches running through valleys or along the shores of four ponds. All are well marked, with trail maps available.

The first group leads past Burnett Pond south to the Borden Mountain Fire Tower, at 2500'. The second group leads north past Bog Pond, South Pond, and North Pond, and culminates at Spruce Hill, the reservation's highest elevation, at 2566'.

This spot affords spectacular views of four states--Vermont's Green Mountains to the north, New York's Adirondacks to the northwest, the nearby Greylock range to the southwest, and the faraway Mt. Monadnock in Peterborough, New Hampshire to the east. All trails also lead to Tannery Falls, the highest waterfall in Massachusetts and a uniquely beautiful place.

Beyond Savoy Mountain State Forest, and just a four-mile drive to the west, is the 12,500-acre Mt. Greylock State Reservation, whose thousand acres of rolling foothills, known as Greylock Glen, offer more backcountry trails with breathtaking vistas.

A NOTE ABOUT RATES: The average rate is $125 per night--an average of $107 per night off-season and $143 per night in-season.

These are the per-night rates for a WEEKLY rental only, since the per-night rate charged for a week is reduced beginning with the third night and further still every night thereafter.

As the 'Rates' section indicates, the per-night rate for only the MINIMUM TWO-NIGHT stay, off-season, is $175 ($350 total) and in-season is $225 ($450 total).

Great foliage first weeks of October

We had a great week in October in this well maintained cottage. It has great windows for the warm weather and good heat for the cold. Borders park land so the stars are wonderful - its worth it just for the stars. Good birdwatching. Nice host. Mass MOCA are is a short drive. Lots of local fun to be had. Plenty of peace, quiet and nature too. Dont miss the Crane paper company tour. (Its where they make the paper for US currency). We will be visiting again.

Second visit was as good as the first

Stayed over a week and enjoyed the quiet mountain top with wonderful views. Great bird watching. Took in local culture such as the Clark Museum and the Susan B. Anthony home and lots more. There is a nice 22 mile bicycle path within a mile of the cottage which provided a nice adventure for us. Mt Greylock was a fun place to spend a day. We hiked in Vermont which is close by and MA. Wayne is very accommodating and friendly. The Cottage is clean, well maintained, and has a great screened in porch with French doors which open fully to make the porch into an extension of the cottage, We spent lots of time there listening to nature. Stars are spectacular with great views of the Milky Way. The mountain top provides a nice breeze in hot weather. I highly recommend the cottage for a getaway with plenty of activities and culture close by. We saw 2 concerts at Tanglewood. The outside tickets are only $20 and the outside is a as good or better experience than the inside!

Quiet, in the Berkshires

Wayne was a first-rate host. The cottage is New England, in a New England garden setting, with wildflowers in the immediate area and forest behind and in the front view, looking out over trees and over the hills. Simple and cozy. A comfortable reading room. Kitchen has everything you need. Great place for hiking, and great for birdwatching. Town of Adams, way down the mountain, is serviceable, but it’s best to bring groceries with you. Wish we could have stayed longer.

beautiful, charming, blessedly calm respite from the city

Our stay at Wayne's cottage was absolutely wonderful. It is off the beaten path, located at the top of a winding mountain road - and we wouldn't have had it any other way. You'll be surrounded by quiet nature but still a short ~10 minute drive from the heart of downtown. The cottage itself was cozy, clean and charming and Wayne couldn't have been a warmer or more welcoming host - always attentive while respecting our privacy. Highly recommend this stay if you are traveling to the Adams/North Adams area!
