Martins Point: Historic Chesapeake waterfront estate -pool, beach, dock & more!

Description

Martins Point is a late 18th Century home located on Maryland's historic Eastern Shore and sited on a secluded finger of land, surrounded by water on three sides – a place to unwind, immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Chesapeake Bay and reconnect with family and friends.

The house and adjacent cottages include 8 bedrooms and 6.5 bathrooms and can accommodate 16 guests (we only rent the entire compound and do not rent cottages or rooms separately). Furnishings reflect our family's taste: an appreciation of the farm's rural, colonial origins offset by a love of antiques and oriental rugs.

The pool and front lawn open on a favorite anchorage of Maryland sailors who frequently come and go during summer months. Great blue herons, bald eagles and ospreys drift by daily. Our dock can accommodate boats with up to 4 ft draft. The cove in front of the house, sheltered from weather on 4 sides, will accommodate larger boats at anchor -- bottom is 12 feet deep at mean low tide – and offers a wide, wave-free area to explore. Our O'Day sailboat, kayaks, windsurfer and outboard skiff are also available for rental if you don't have a boat and would like to get out on the water. Crabbing and fishing from the dock are favorite summer pastimes.

The property includes over two miles of walks along the shore of the Choptank River and La Trappe Creek. Our long sand spit at the mouth of La Trappe Creek offers a beach to sunbathe and wade. Quiet roads nearby offer great opportunities for biking.

During fall and winter thousands of Canada geese and ducks winter in the coves and fields around the house. We've watched geese for many years but have never lost our love of watching them cup their wings as they come in to land.

The surrounding towns have a lot to offer. Easton, Oxford and St. Michael's are all within easy distance and sport good seafood restaurants, great antiquing and interesting shops. In St Michael's, the Chesapeake Maritime Museum is always worth a visit. The area hosts a number of events and festivals including the St. Michaels Antique Boat Show, St. Michaels Oyster Fest, Easton Waterfowl Festival, Easton Plein Air Art Festival and Chesapeake Film Festival among others. In the fall, the Blackwater Wildlife Refuge is a wonderful place to see a profusion of wildlife -- more geese and ducks than you can imagine. The trip there will also take you through one of the last undeveloped areas of the Eastern Shore.

La Trappe Creek and the nearby Choptank River are fun to explore by boat and include several historic homes including Hampden (oldest house in Talbot County), Beauvoir, Compton, Boston and The Wilderness, all built during the early colonial era.

At the tip of Martins Point, an early 19th-century dugout canoe was found buried and is thought to have been built by slaves for use in the Underground Railroad. It is now a centerpiece of the Frederick Douglas Museum in Baltimore.

Martins Point is located near Trappe, Maryland, 15 minutes from Easton and Oxford and less than two hour's drive from Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia. Drive time from Baltimore Washington International airport is 90 minutes.

Beautiful retreat on the shore

Our organization spent the week at Martin Point Farm, which was the perfect setting for our meetings and activities. We absolutely enjoyed the peace and beauty of the point and being completely surrounded by water, as well as the historic house full of character. We were able to fit a large group in the house and spent lots of time on the expansive porches. Everything went very smoothly and the owner and caretaker were always accessible and very helpful, which was much appreciated considering all the logistics when organizing for such a large group.

Great location for a big, family birthday celebration

We gathered in June 2016 from all over -- CT, NJ, DC and PA at this wonderful estate -- to celebrate a milestone birthday. Everyone was comfortable in their rooms and the house has a warm/loving, family vibe. The second floor porch was perfect for the one night when we had a chance to watch a storm roll in. The property was perfect for everyone's diverse interests -- running/ walking, fishing, boating, and swimming in the pool. We rented the Dann's skiff and their two kayaks which were really fun (worth the extra, nominal cost). The kitchen is not huge, but somehow we all made it work and enjoyed cooking together. We would definitely rent this property again; our ages ranged from 55 to 9 and all said they'd like to return. The caretaker on the property was helpful and available any time we had questions. Truly a fabulous location, gorgeous water views, relaxing and just what we all were hoping for. Lastly, we brought our 36' power boat over from Annapolis and easily got in and out of of the deep water dock.

Amazing waterfront property

My group stayed here for a work retreat during the first week of May 2017. This property was great wit tons of bedrooms in the bedroom ad two side cottages. We spent half of the time on then grill and hanging out along the water. The views were amazing. The owner was responsive with any questions we had during the stay. A+ rental experience.

A wonderful family retreat

We had a two-week visit at Martins Point and could not have been more pleased. The house, simple but handsome and commodious, sits on a point of land overlooking a beautiful cove on Trappe Creek, near where it joins the Choptank River (which is about a mile wide at this point). The cove is beautiful, frequently harboring yachts for the night. Some of us sat in the chairs overlooking the cove while the children and grandchildren swam, sailed, and kayaked. Some of the family focused on the wonderful fresh-water swimming pool, others on the boats and kayaks, and others of us took long walks along the water’s edge or through the cornfields. There are several large grocery stores in Easton (some 12 miles away), as well as a thriving downtown with good restaurants and antique stores. Oxford is even closer, less commercial but even more attractive, and is the landing for a wonderful ferry boat across the Tred Avon River to Bellevue–a fun experience even if not going to St. Michaels, which is another 7 miles drive. Oxford and St. Michaels both have good restaurants as well as busy harbors and blocks of historic homes.

Idyllic setting. Wonderful time.

We cannot say enough good things about this amazing waterfront property. It had it all—wandering sheep, fields of corn, picturesque barns, a large pool, boats.... The main house was full of history and charm and the cottages were perfectly appointed. We had a large group of 13 and the idea that we could all gather together to cook, play charades and board games and eat on one of the lovely screened in porches or inside AND retreat to a hammock or solitary walk on our own was incredible. We all felt immediately at home during our reunion. The owner could not have been more helpful or welcoming. We wholeheartedly recommend this one-of-a-kind treasure for couples, families and friends who want memories that will last a lifetime.

Exceptionally picturesque

We had an absolutely magical weekend at Martin’s Point. The property is exceptionally picturesque from the long tree lined entrance to the Adirondack chairs perched on the point surrounded by water. We were ten adults gathered for a special birthday celebration. We were delighted by the classic charm and privacy of Martin’s Point-we didn’t want to leave the property. The main house is full of history, antiques and family mementos. Each of the cottages has its own charm with painted furniture and clean and comfortable bedding. We took advantage of the cottages, main house and two screened in porches. The swimming pool and kayaks were also well used. The owners were incredibly helpful and recommended a masseuse and caterer that came to the property. This property is ideal for a large gathering of friends or family.

An idyllic retreat on the water

We recently stayed at Martin’s Point Farm on the Eastern Shore. It is a wonderful spot – both the grounds and the house and cottages. Situated on a point just off the Choptank River, just off the Chesapeake Bay, Martin’s Point offers total relaxation in an idyllic setting. Entering the main house, one steps back in time. Built more than a century ago, the house is perfectly maintained and appointed with two beautiful screened-in porches, upstairs and downstairs, that catch the breeze. The two cottages each have 2 bedrooms and provide a quiet respite from goings-on in the main house. The place was spotlessly clean and had everything a large group could want for both play and relaxation, including a wonderful pool and kayaks for recreation. Our host, Tom, was easy to deal with, very helpful and accommodating - a very pleasant guy. All in all, Martin’s Point is a fabulous retreat, especially for large groups looking to get away. We can't wait to return!

Stunning property

We loved this property with lots of room inside and outside for everyone. We stayed a week and only left the property a few times to restock or have dinner out. We had someone come to the house and give massages and also rented a jetski & a boat that was delivered to us at the properties own dock. Would highly recommend this for large family or friends vacations.

Beautiful place for a family vacation

This property is not just gorgeous, but also in a wonderful location....private but not too far from Easton, Cambridge and St. MIchaels. The pool and grounds are lovely, with beautiful views of the water. The house is so historic and interesting, with the feeling of stepping into a different era. As with any home built so long ago, there is no "open concept" or huge kitchen, but the screened in porches and stately dining room more than make up for modern style. We highly recommend it for a family gathering!

Fabulous weekend with family and friends!

We had a fantastic weekend- so much activity for kids and adults- swimming, kayaking, fishing, crabbing! We had a blast and hope to be back!
