It is considered by many to be one of the prettiest locations in the whole mid coast area with a beach, harbor, and wharf, and 20-30 offshore islands. Walk for miles by ocean and explore tidal pools with starfish, crabs, shells and sea glass. Sea birds are plentiful. At low tide you can even walk out to Cushing Island. We now have one of the finest cleaning services on the coast.

There are herds of seals sunning themselves on the rock ledges to see if you have a boat to go out to the islands and rock ledges. At certain times of the year there is great fishing off rocks in front of house to the right of the wharf by the channel at low tide. Some people catch 20-50 lb stripped bass almost every year on the first cast at low tide from the rocks in front of us to the right of the wharf, and then throws it back because he feels sorry for the fish, please check the state fish regulations as to size and number which may change each year.

The harbor in front of the cottage is on the Wessawweskeag River which means 'the river of many points' in the native American language. Where the river meets the ocean is a bay with many islands of the Mussel Ridge chain in front of our beach.

On a hot, sunny day when the rocks warm up and the tide covers them on the north side of the beach there is a small area where the water may warm up to 75-80 degrees. Guests with a motorboat can take people waterskiing and swimming at Lake Chickawaukee outside of Rockland.

Also please check out some of the local stores like the Keag store and the Thomaston grocery with great Maine ice cream brands and local produce in season. In front of the store are history blocks of the town since 1605.

Take advantage of the lobster! Watch the lobstermen from the deck or from the kitchen table. You can even buy some from local lobstermen and prepare it yourself - the best way to cook lobsters is in ocean water! (40% of the lobsters in the state are caught in this Knox county.)

Bring your binoculars. Some guests see a pair of bald eagles fishing from the house at low tide on the rocks in front of the house in early Spring to feed their baby eaglets. Apparently the pair of bald eagles are nesting nearby. They have also been sighted through the summer - just over the tree line from Pleasant Beach Road by Waterman Beach Road flying over the Pleasant Beach woods. Also there are sometimes moose in the area and on Spaulding island (22 1/2 acres) across the harbor from us. Also you can walk out to Cushing Island near us at low tide.

Local lighthouses (Owl's Head, Rockland Breakwater and Marshall's Point), Camden Hills State Park, Camden Snow Bowl, Farnsworth Art Museum and the Audubon Project Puffin Institute (on Main St in Rockland) are some favorite day trip destinations. Nearby towns like Camden and Rockland are fun to explore and do some souvenir shopping. Camden Harbor is a classic tourist trap with visitors from all over the world, a beautiful harbor, shops and a great variety of restaurants. Acadia National Park is only a few hours away with: spectacular scenery, views from the top of Cadillac Mountain, carriage trails, Jordan Pond, Thunder Hole, beaver dams, and lots more.

Also a very close popular spot is the birdwatching sanctuary on Buttermilk Lane between the village of South Thomaston and US Rt 1 at the source of the St George River and the Wessawweskeag River with 1600 acres with Wading Birds: Great Egrets, Blue Herons, and Glossy Ibis, Marsh Birds: American Bitterns and Soras, Shore Birds: Least Sandpipers and Short billed Dowitchers, Song Birds: Chestnut sided Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, and Sharp tailed Sparrow and Waterfowl: Mallards, Wood Ducks, American Greenwinged Teals, Ringnecked Ducks, and Hooded Mergansars.

Campobello Island is an International Park just over the Canadian border (now you need a passport to cross the border). It is where President Franklin Roosevelt grew up going for the summer each year.

Farnsworth Art Museum has a free day on Wednesdays from 6-8pm which may change each year or season, it has also old paintings from the early 1800's.

The Puffin Institute offers free movies and lectures about reestablishing puffin colonies or rookeries on the offshore islands with nesting pairs from Newfoundland,

There are bird watching cruises that go out of Port Clyde, New Harbor or Boothbay Harbor. Puffin sightings are almost guaranteed. Also there is a short cruise out of Bar Harbor where the diver goes down in an insulated suit and takes pictures of his dive and all of the sea creatures on the ocean floor that guests can watch live on the boat on a 42 in plasma TV screen.

On the property, around the house, there are many plantings of perennial flowers and bushes that draw hummingbirds and other wildlife. They include: heather, 3 varieties of lavender - including the variety from which perfume is made, manardis(hummingbirds love this and are often there), osobe, butterfly bushes with 4 colors of blossoms, foxglove, lilac, Arizona Red Shades Blanket Flower(Gailardia), Hummingbird Summersweet(Clethra ainifolia Hummingbird), Pink Mist Pincushion Flower(Scabiosa columbaria), PowWow White Coneflower(Echinacea purpurea) and Mountain Bluet(Centaurea montana). Hanging baskets contain a combination of annuals, Calibrachoa, Trailing Petunias, and Verbena. Annuals like salvias, begonias, and petunias are found in flower boxes by the houses on the property.

Also, there are many great restaurants locally, Primo, Amalfi Coast, and a place almost from a different era, Conte's on 148 South Main St in Rockland, you must get there by 4:30 to 4:45Pm before it opens at 5PM to get a table, then magazine, then current issues, then August 2013, then go to the article 'Chefs Today Are Nothing But a Bunch of Punks', it is very much like when his grandfather came from Naples, Italy in 1894 and started a restaurant in Mt Kisco, NY, which his brothers still own and run,

Another priceless one of a kind experience is a visit to the Seabreeze Farm, on 414, with super friendly ADGA Saanen Goats that are very affectioate and some ancestors of the goats, you can pet the goats, even the males are so friendly, there are Rouen Ducks, Rare Breed Royal Palm Turkeys, sheep, Toulouse Geese, and a male burro named Chester who chases away any coyotes.

Beautiful home and amazing view!

We loved it! Very comfortable. Owner very helpful and quick at returning calls. We were there during a north easterner storm. Driveway was plowed for us. It would have been nice to have a shovel to scoop a path to the house through the 15” of snow.

Wonderful stay!

We greatly enjoyed staying at this home. Staying cozy and warm despite the snow. The peaceful view and quiet location allowed for total relaxation and the children had a great time playing in the snow.

It was a great weekend!

I took my family as well as my siblings and their family, to celebrate my fathers 60th bday. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves from my 60 year old father to my 2 year old son. The home was very beautiful, everything you could possibly need and then some. Walmart was a 15 min drive, which was very convenient. The location, the view of the ocean, and the home themselves were absolutely beautiful. The owner was also very accommodating and absolutely a pleasure to work with. We are already making plans to go back this summer. We all absolutely loved it.

Stunning, relaxing, remote paradise

Our stay could not have been more perfect. The landscape is stunningly beautiful, the house was perfect and comfortable and well-suited for our needs. The owner, Bill, was kind and attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. We had a wonderful weekend and will definitely be coming back.

Beautiful

Wonderful! Great, kind owners. Beautiful wood work!

It was wonderful and beautiful. Even on the rainy days it was great. Peaceful and calm. Definitely want to come back. Check out the beautiful lighthouses and the prison store. Also Karen's hideaway had amazing fish sandwiches. Wonderful for kids and adults alike. Games and puzzles at the house and beds made and ready to go. Couldn't ask for a more welcoming place or people to rent from. Thanks so much!

Beautiful Maine.

What a wonderful week our family had at Bill's home. He was gracious and kind, always ready to answer any questions. The home with the balconey's and deck was very comfortable for our family. The view is so much more than can be described - absolutely beautiful. We spent so much time enjoying the rocks. We had a lobster man deliver lobster to our door. It was a wonderful time of fellowship. Thank you Bill!

MAJESTIC OCEAN VIEWS

We had a spectacular view of the ocean. Every bedroom had the ocean view including the sunrise. As great as the towns were to tour , it was difficult to leave the house. Beautiful peaceful place.

Awesome house and location

We had a wonderful stay here, the house is beautiful and the views are breath taking. Waking up to the sun coming up on the water was just great. I would for sure recommend this rental. The owner went out if his way to make sure we had a everything we needed to make our stay a great one. We will be renting again when we can for sure! Thank you Bill!

Great View & Value

Maranatha Cottage housed our three generations of family quite well. There was plenty of space for the seven of us. It's always great getting family together to play cribbage, board games and relax after hockey. The cottage was warm and comfortable. The view from all the bedrooms was picturesque!
