Clarance Gonstead Guest Cottage was built for the world renowned chiropractor in 1952 by Architect, Herb Fritz Jr. in the Prairie Style of architecture made popular by Herb's Mentor, Frank Lloyd Wright. The cottage is centrally located in town on two acres and separated from the main house. The exterior is clad in clay tile and lanon stone and the interior finishes are stone and tide water cypress walls with quarry tile and carpet floors.
The hilly local terrain, abandoned level rail road trails and off road trails in the state park provide opportunity for all levels of biking enthusiasts. Mount Horeb has an 18 hole golf course, public pool and almost weekly organized events within walking distance. The radiant floor heating system and the proximity to down hill and cross country trails make an ideal winter retreat, unfortunately we have had to fall in line with all the other inns and discontinue use of the wood burning fireplace to satisfy insurance restrictions so we installed a 4K television with a sound bar that provides the visual and auditory ambience of a variety of wood burning fire places and the floor provides the heat. You also have the flexibility of watching a movie on an internet TV.

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights for a getaway for our 15th wedding anniversary. The guest cottage had plenty of space, a kitchen with adequate utensils, a lovely garden, a desktop computer, and a TV with access to Netflix, etc. It was lovely. It's a great location close to Mt. Horeb, which has some cute restaurants and shops, and the Military Ridge bike trail. We biked directly from the cottage to the bike trail and then on hilly country roads -- it was beautiful. Phil and Joyce were a pleasure to meet and were helpful hosts. Highly recommend this place!
This place is incredible! Mission style architecture - you feel like Frank Lloyd Wright will walk through the door at any minute! Joyce and Phil are fantastic hosts and will do anything they can to make you feel comfortable. Their yard is gorgeous and they provide a ton of amenities. This is the guest house - they stay in the main house which is separated by the garage so you have plenty of privacy. You are within walking distance of Main Street which is quaint yet has delicious places to eat. I would definitely recommend it and plan to visit again!
Another wonderful stay at the cottage. This unique destination is very relaxing and the hospitality is appreciated. There are also many things to see and do in and around Mount Horeb. You won't be disappointed!
If you're looking for a place in Southern Wisconsin this is the one! Cannot recommend this one enough - it is a Wonderful and unique house. Plenty of privacy and things to do in the area. You won't find another listing like this and the rates were extremely reasonable.
Joyce and Phil were both unbelievablely awesome and very kind, helpful, and just plain fun. Gave us lots of info on local attractions and restaurants too. We will 100% be returning here later in the year or next summer and would recommend this to anyone!

Wonderful guest house not far from nice restaurants in Mt. Horeb. Loved that the owners had bikes for us to use. We also enjoyed the art fair. Accommodations are nice and clean.
A truly amazing property a short walk from all that main street Mt. Horeb has to offer, or stay put and enjoy the natural beauty, peace and quiet. Ask the property owners, Phil and Joyce, to tell you the story of how they rescued the property from ruin and restored it to the magnificent place it is today.
We opted to break up a drive to Indiana and are so happy Joyce and Phil’s guest house was available. They were so very helpful, the house was absolutely amazing and we will not hesitate to stay again!
We’ve stayed in a lot of cool and unique places, but this was by far one of the coolest and best experiences we’ve had in our travels. Amazing house, insane property, amazing room. 5+ starts. Hope to be back sometime.
