Puerto Escondido: Puerto Escondido ('Hidden Port' in Spanish) is just that, a hidden treasure untouched by mega-chains of hotels. Come discover it yourself.
The Beaches of Puerto Escondido: There are three main beaches, Playa Principal, Playa Marinero, and Zicatela, close to the main part of town, as well as several other smaller beaches to the west. Playa Principal is the more centrally-located beach. Parallelling the beach is Avenida Perez Gasga, a pedestrian-only street known as the Adoquin. Presiding in the tourist kiosk at the west end of the Adoquin is the legendary Gina the Information Goddess. The Andador Esconico Sea Walk begins at Playa Principal and winds westward along rocky oceanside cliffs. About 2 blocks up the hill from the Adoquin is coastal highway 200 and on the other side of that is the downtown business district where you can find banks, many restaurants and cafes, the mercado for local fresh fruits, vegetables, fish and local specialties, etc.
East of Playa Principal is Playa Marinero followed by Playa Zicatela, a long straight beach on the east side of the bay and can be seen from Playa Principal. Zicatela is where the strong waves are that make Puerto Escondido a world class surfing destination. Zicatela offers many beachfront restaurants, cafes, bars, nightlife and shops and has a fun international surf vibe.
Even closer to Casa Del Mar is a little village called La Punta that is a favorite of cool, low key bohemian surfers with a natural food shop, and plenty of beachfront restaurants and cafes, and it even has a great Thai restaurant with live music during the season.
Location History: The town of Puerto Escondido was established in 1928 as a port for shipping coffee, although the area has been inhabited by indigenous populations for centuries. In the 1960's it was connected to other coastal towns by Highway 200. Tourists began to discover the town and surfers found its beaches. Its importance as a port diminished as coffee shipments began going by truck instead of boat. The port does continue to support commercial fishing activity

THE ULTIMATE VACATION!
Casa Dela Mar is paradise! My extended family (ages 9-76) were in heaven walking the 5 mile beach (we saw almost no one) and swimming/body surfing/boogie boarding in the giant waves for endless hours every day. We took naps in the shaded hammocks and on the many lounge chairs and Francisco made us fresh daiquiris and margaritas and guacamole and chips and then Brenda spoiled us with her cooking at mealtime. The weather was perfect and we never needed AC- the two master bedrooms are open to the beach and you can listen to the waves as you sleep. We stayed home most of the week - why leave paradise? - but Omar's dolphin/whale/sea turtle boat tour was great fun - and Zicatela Surf beach was worth the visit to watch the pro surfers and visit the shops and have a cocktail on the beach at sunset. We all fell in love with the area and HOPE to be back some day very soon. Thank you Karen for sharing your fabulous house with us!

Breathtaking house! Amazing staff!
The house itself is beautiful, we were a big family and everyone got a bed and lots of privacy. The house manager and the owner were very communicative and helpful. The staff was very nice and the food was amazing! We will definitely come back! Very much recommended and great location

Absolutely stunning place where you can truly unwind
Casa del mar is a beautiful place to really relax and get into holiday mode. I was there a week and found it hard to stay away from the place. We body surfed the waves out front every day, ate delicious meals 3 times a day (always too much food!) and lazed around in the sun. The service was great and I loved the hospitality of Francisco and the grils who were gorgeous. I'll 100% be back to this private, tranquil sanctuary.
