Description

5 BRs, 7 baths; el Centro, historic view; rent entire house or 3-BR or 2-BR unit
GUANAJUATO: the crown jewel of Spanish Colonial cities in the Mexico highlands! Settled in the 1550's, the city looks more like towns in southern Spain, Italy, or Portugal than most in Latin America. Exceptionally mild climate at 6600 ft above sea level; amazingly diverse and cosmopolitan arts. Annual Festival Cervantino runs through most of October and with performers and artists from across the world.

This beautifully renovated and rebuilt house is in the center of Guanajuato. It features metal lighting fixtures built by Artesanias Suarez in nearby Marfil, custom-built furniture from Muebles y Antiguedades in Dolores Hidalgo, custom mesquite dining tables and chairs from Adjuntos del Rio, with bathroom sinks and 14 different designs of tiles (azulejos) from Artesanias Vasquez in the kitchens, bathrooms, and stairs. The five bedrooms are each themed on Mexican artists (see details below) and each has an en suite bathroom with shower, sink, and toilet.

The house can be rented as a whole (5 bedrooms); the entire house rental rates are: 3-night minimum at $165/night; weekly rate is $150/night; monthly rate is $140/night.

The house can be rented as a 3-bedroom unit (Unit A - Los Arcos) or 2-bedroom unit (Unit B - Buena Vista). Because the house is designed to be rented as two separate units, there are two kitchens, two dining areas, and two living rooms (and obviously one of the above in each unit).

It's situated on the corner of Callejon San Cristobal (a narrow street accessible by car which leads down past the Callejon del Beso into el Centro) and Callejon Rosarito (a pedestrian alley that leads down to the Mercado Hidalgo). It's within minutes' walk of the Mercado Hidalgo, Jardin de la Reforma, Plazuela de San Fernando, Alhondiga, cathedral, Jardin Union, Teatro Juarez, and Festival Cervantino venues - the heart of the best Colonial Highland town in Mexico - three blocks from the 'Callejon del Beso' (the Alley of the Kiss) above Plaza de los Angeles, and on one of few streets accessible by car in the Zona Centro (but we discourage driving large vehicles - Suburbans or big SUVs - down our narrow one-way street).

There is very limited parking on our street, and no parking within about 100 feet.

UNIT A (Los Arcos) - entry from the street (Callejon San Cristobal) through custom mesquite doors. The Unit A rental rates are: 3-night minimum at $100/night; weekly rate is $90/night; monthly rate is $80/night.

We call this unit Los Arcos due to the 3 large pink limestone keystone arches around the central light well, and the nested 3 arches above the stairs connection the living room and dining area.

FIRST FLOOR: street entry into la sala (living room), which contains an upholstered couch, love seat, and chair, and a large screen smart TV. A few steps down into the center of the house is the dining room, with a large mesquite table that seats 10 people, a large trastero (china cabinet - this contains the talavera plates for this unit), and a reproduction of a classic Mexican brasero (kitchen counter). The dining room opens through a pink limestone arch into the central light well (which used to be an open atrium) which extends up 3 stories to a large skylight on the roof top. A full kitchen (gas cooktop, electric oven, dishwasher, refrigerator, double sink) occupies two sides of the back room opening into the light well. Both the kitchen and the brasero feature yellow patterned tiles.

The Jose Guadalupe Posada-themed bedroom (he's the great Mexican political cartoonist and caricaturist who created 'Catrina Calavera') is on the other side of the light well: a double bed and large armoire (ropero), bedside tables, built-in drawers in the bed frame, and brass lighting fixtures, and an en suite bathroom with blue patterned tile. Adjacent to the stairs to the next floor is a common-area powder room (toilet and sink) and a laundry area with washer and dryer.

SECOND FLOOR: a stairway at the back of the ground floor leads to the second floor reading room, which contains a desk, chairs, and a bookcase and stretches along two sides of the light well.

The bedrooms on this floor are themed on two artists who settled in Guanajuato - the Mexican muralist Jose Chavez-Morado (see his murals in the Alhondiga and the Museo del Pueblo de Guanajuato) and his German wife Olga Costa (see her work at their home, which is now a museum - the Casa de Arte Olga Costa-José Chávez Morado museum - in the Pastitas neighborhood). At one end of the reading room is the Olga Costa-themed bedroom, with a double bed, hand-painted ropero, headboard, and bedside tables, copper lighting fixtures, and an en suite bathroom with green patterned tile. This room also features a brick arch on the wall over the headboard, framing a mural painted by a local artist collective (by Zamer Zamer of the Colectivo Maria Pistoles).

At the other end of the reading room is the Jose Chavez-Morado themed bedroom, with a king-sized bed, large ropero, headboard and bedside tables, large copper lighting fixtures, and a large en suite bathroom with solid green tiles.

THIRD FLOOR: stairs at the back of the 2nd floor lead to a 3rd floor indoor terrace that wraps around two sides of the central light well and features a large expanse of glass windows facing el Centro, directly across from the Jardin de la Reforma. There's a set of rattan furniture for lounging.

UNIT B (Buena Vista): separate entry from the alley (Callejon Rosarito) opens to the stairway which leads to Unit B. The Unit B rental rates are: 3-night minimum at $80/night; weekly rate at $70/night; monthly rate is $60/night.

COMMON AREA (3rd floor): contains the living room, with a couch and love seat and smart LED TV; the dining area, with a trastero and mesquite table that seats 6; a full kitchen with gas cooktop, electric oven, dishwasher, refrigerator, microwave, and double sink; an adjacent common-area powder room with sink and toilet. This area occupies two sides of the central light well and has frosted glass on the windows facing the light well to allow natural illumination but offer privacy (Unit A's indoor terrace occupies the space on the other sides of the light well on this level).

SECOND FLOOR: a half-flight down from the Unit B common area, overlooking the Callejon San Cristobal, is the Diego Rivera-themed bedroom. Our old friend, the American artist Bob Runyon, created the large painting hanging above the bed's headboard after watching the early demolition and renovation work in this house. The bedroom contains a queen-sized bed, a ropero, chest of drawers, 2 bedside tables, and a headboard carved with alcatraces (calla lilies). There's a small balcony on the street side, and an en suite bathroom with blue and red patterned tile.
THIRD FLOOR: a half-flight up from the Unit B common area, also facing Callejon San Cristobal, is the Frida Kahlo-themed bedroom, which features a beautiful boveda - a brick vaulted ceiling. It contains a queen-sized bed, a ropero, 2 bedside tables, and a headboard carved with desert cacti and agave. There's a small balcony on the street side, and an en suite bathroom with green and blue patterned tile.

ROOFTOP TERRACE:
the roof of the house is a large terraza with seating and table for up to 8 and a small pavilion to protect from sun and weather; breath-taking views of Zona Centro and most of the city and surrounding mountains (thus the name of this unit - Buena Vista translates as 'beautiful view'). The terrace is only accessible through Unit B, unless the entire house is rented by a single group.

MISCELLANEOUS:
Solar water heating units and tankless hot water heaters supplies entire household. The 5 en suite bathrooms have gorgeous talavera sinks and tiling (as do the kitchens). Linens and towels supplied. Each unit has a complete kitchen, dining and living rooms, and a washer and dryer. There's a common area powder room (toilet and sink) in each of the units besides the en suite bathrooms.

We highly recommend that guests DO NOT drive into Guanajuato - there is very little public parking available, and the municipal parking garages charge 20 pesos/hour. Parking in the tunnels and subterranean streets is free but limited to 2 hours - and if you get a parking ticket, the police will confiscate the car's license plate and you'll have to get to the police headquarters to pay a fine and reclaim your plate.

Beautiful house and great location

The house was amazing and beautifully decorated. The house is located near the center of the city which made it very convenient to explore the city. We were in love with the view of city from the roof terrace... breathtaking! In respect to our hosts, both Jeff and Beatriz were very accommodating and responsive. I am highly recommend staying at here!

Beautiful home with gorgeous rooftop view

We lived this house! We were a group of one couple and 2 individuals, and stayed in Unit A, but paid some extra for rooftop access since there was no one in Unit B at the time. We loved that we each had our own bedroom and en suite bath. The kitchen was very nice, and we enjoyed being able to prepare a few breakfasts and light dinners at home. Very large and nice stove, dishwasher, washer, and dryer. Netflix on the TV in the living room was great for some relaxing evenings at home. The only warning is that the climb on foot is pretty intense. Arriving to the door by Uber or taxi is a possibility, but sometimes it was hard, especially with Uber, if they don't understand how to get there. But overall, great place for a very fair price.

Perfect home for our vacation stay.

This house was exactly what we wanted for our first trip to Guanajuato. We wanted to experience culture, the people, and the lifestyle. This house gave us exactly what we wanted. If you don’t mind the 5 min cardio, this house is for you. You will notice that this house is furnished with all things Guanajuato. It is beautifully made, in a perfect location of the city. Everything you come to Guanajuato city for is surrounded by this house. The callejón del beso is just steps away!! I have nothing but good things to say about this place, and I highly recommend it.

Exceeded description

The house is simply stunnning. Outstanding decoration and attention to detail is everywhere. My party had 10 people which easily stayed in this large house with 5 bedrooms, 5 full baths,2 half bathrooms, 2 extremely well equipped kitchens, and two dining rooms. The top deck provides some of the nicest stunning views possible in Guanajuato and the location is only a .3 mile short walk from the center of town-close enough for all the fun but also away from the noise. The amenities in the house are perfect and everything needed for a perfect stay is provided. It was a pleasure to spend a week here and we will be back.

Great Location and nice view

We rented Unit B, the smaller of the two units, in February 2019. This two bedroom, two bath unit was very comfortable and the view was gorgeous. It's fun to relax on the roof deck in the evening with a view of the city. The house is a fair walk up a hill, but is well-located to the center of town--a 15-20 minute walk to just about everything. I think everyone would enjoy staying here!

Superlative view from terrace

I have stayed in Guanajuato many times., and this trip I brought five friends to take in the city's history and culture. Casa Rosarito afforded us the chance to enjoy all of the city's magic. It is close to the calm Jardin Reforma, right up the street from Plaza San Fernando with food and drink, and easily accessible to the unique Mercado Hidalgo. Yet, the Rosarito provided the six of us even more: Each morning we would have coffee, discuss the day's plans, and have a short Spanish lesson on the terrace as the sun rose. In the evening, we talked about the day, played cards, had a drink and sat amazed as the city's diverse colors changed while the sun set. The house manager deftly arranged taxis from and to the airport, and she hired a van to take us to nearby San Miguel de Allende. In short, the house's amenities, its location, its beautiful design and comfort, and the staff's helpfulness and guidance made our stay perfect.

Great Days in the heart of Guanajuato

Our stay at the house was amazing, the roof top is a quite place with an incredible view of the city. The house is so well located that you can walk to many of the great attractions. The house is comfortable and the manager is an incredible host. This is a perfect spot to stay, relax and enjoy all the beautiful things that Guanajuato has to offer.

beautiful and centrally located house

Beautiful house and location, Sandra was very nice, house has many stairs but it was worth it. The views for the terrace are amazing.

Beautiful Mexican home

Sandra was awesome to work with. We rented the entire home. I loved the fact that not only did eveyone have their own bedroom, but they also had their own full bath. This is an incredible 3 story home with 2 kitchens, 2 living areas, 5 bedrooms, 5 full baths and 2 half baths. The outside terrace is breathtaking!

GORGEOUS property

My family absolutely loved this house. So much detail and beauty throughout! The pictures don't do it justice. Also, this house has incredible views of the city. Everything we needed was available. Will definitely stay here again when we visit Guanajuato!

Beautiful Guanajuato

Casa Rosarito is a beautiful home with amazing views, overlooking the entire city!!! It is up a short and steep hill but a perfect compromise for the view! And it is only about a 2 minute walk down to Callejón del Beso and 5 minute walk to Jardin de la Union and Teatro Juarez! This home has 2 adjoining units which were perfect for our two families traveling together! It allowed our children to spend time together yet gave us the privacy of our own separate quarters! Sandra, the property manager was extremely helpful! She helped us arrange for transportation and made our check in/out process very smooth and easy! Thanks for sharing this beautiful home with us! We would definitely recommend it and love to stay here again in the future!!!
